Jerusalem – Capital of Judah
“First Kings covers the 120 years from the beginning of Solomon’s reign in 971 BC through Ahaziah’s reign ending in 851 BC The key date is 931 BC the year the kingdom was divided into the northern nation of Israel and the southern nation of Judah”
As we study the book of 1 Kings, we are going to see how the actions of one individual has such major impact on other people -
United Kingdom – 1-11
Read 2:1-4
ü Solomon assumes kingship – Instruction for Father
David commands Solomon to do several things –
Be strong and show yourself a man – 2 Keep charge of the Lord – Guard or watch – 3 Walk in his ways – follow - 3 Keep His status, commandments, rules, and testimonies – 3
Status – regulations Commandments – his commands, his terms Rules – judgment Testimonies – testimony his status
ü The heeding of the instruction – 3:3
ü The blessing – 3:9-10
The request of Solomon -
Wisdom - Knowledge –
As a result of Solomon’s faithfulness to the Lord the kingdom was abundantly blessed –
In the mist of difficulty, he is able to discern truth and error – 3:16-28 Privileged to build the temple – 6 He had the ark of the covenant brought into the temple - Prayer of commitment – 9:22-26
God will bless those who are faithful to the Lord –
You see how Solomon was being faithful to the Lord. As a result of his faithfulness, he was blessed as well as the entire nation of Israel.
In chapter 11 a very tragic event takes place -
ü Beginning of a downward spiral – 11
Solomon forsakes God – 11:1-8
Marries foreign women – 11:3 Worship’s false gods – 11:3
Listen very close guys and gals get this point – no individual is ever exempt from sin! No matter your position in life –
As a result of the sin of Solomon there are going to be many consequences for his sin –
11:11 – the kingdom will be tore from you 931 BC
Divided Kingdom – 12-22
ü Division of the nation –
o Southern – Judah – Re (2 tribes)
§ Rehoboam – 1 Kings 11:42-14:31
§ 12:10-11 – insensitive king
§ They king partook in idol worship
o Northern - Israel – Jo (10 tribes)
§ Jeroboam 1 – 1 Kings 11:26-14:20
§ King partook in idol worship
Keep in mind that the division of the kingdom happened b/c the wisest man on earth sinned and forsook following God with all of his heart –
Dever – “As a result of this rebellion, the kingdom divides between the southern tribes of Judah and Benjamin (referred to as Judah) and the ten northern tribes (referred to collectively as Israel)”
ü Deterioration of the nations –
o Northern kings –
§ Abijah – 1 Kings 14:31-15:815:3 – did not follow God
§ Asa – 1 Kings 15:8-2415:9-15 – did what was right
§ Jehoshaphat – 1 Kings 15:8-24did what was right in the eyes of the Lord
o Southern kings –
§ Nadab – 1 Kings 15:25-2826 – did what was evil
§ Baasha – 1 Kings 15:27-16:734 – did what was evil
§ Elah – 1 Kings 16:6-14did what was evil
§ Zimri – 1 Kings 16:9-20 did what was evil
§ Omri – 1 Kings 16:15-2825 – did what was evil
§ Ahab – 1 Kings 16:28-22:40 30 – did what was evil
§ Ahaziah – 1 Kings 22:40-2 Kings 1:18 – did what was evil
We also see how because of Solomon’s sin it affects the entire nation of Israel.

In closing let me challenge you with this quote –
Dever – “In 1 Kings, we have several kings who sinned but never repented. The nation was being given kings who reflected the nation’s own character. Israel was hard-hearted toward God and his Word, so God gave them kings who were hard-hearted toward God and his Word.”
You see it does not matter who you are or what you are doing – the point is this that your actions regardless of if they are right or wrong will not only affect you but other people as well! This is a principle that is clearly see throughout the book of 1 Kings –
The way that you and act will affect those around us – If we take the Christian life seriously then they will see that and over time it will impact their lives.
Are you taking your relationship with Christ serious? Are you taking your sin serious?
